YBCC Hosts Ghent University Researcher Simon O'Donovan to Explore Academic Cooperation

As part of its efforts to strengthen ties with Belgian academic institutions and support scientific research on migration, integration, and cultural diversity, Executive Director Salmeen Ali Saleh hosted British researcher, English educator, and visual artist Simon O'Donovan from Ghent University on Sunday, July 12, 2026.

Researching Identity & Citizenship: During the meeting, Mr. O'Donovan presented his academic research project titled:

“Language, Transit, and Identity on the Margins of the Belgian Reception Network: Digital and Face-to-Face Discourses of Citizenship and Belonging”

The study aims to examine asylum seekers' experiences in Belgium and explore how language and communication shape identity and belonging, adhering strictly to Ghent University’s ethical standards.

Facilitating Academic Engagement: Both parties discussed framework possibilities to connect with members of the Yemeni community interested in voluntarily participating in the study, bringing lived experiences into academic discourse while ensuring participant privacy.

Cultural Hospitality: Following the discussions, Mr. Salmen Ali Saleh hosted a lunch in honor of the visiting researcher, featuring traditional Yemeni dishes. Mr. O'Donovan praised the warmth of Yemeni hospitality and the distinct flavors of Yemeni cuisine.

The Yemeni Belgian Cultural Center (YBCC) reaffirms its dedication to expanding academic partnerships and supporting research initiatives that foster cultural dialogue and serve the community.
